Some people only know her from the Ice Age movies, where she is the voice of the wooly mammoth, Ellie. Some others remember her from her older movies like Taxi, and Set It Off. But few know that Queen Latifah had a successful rap career in the late 80s to mid 90s, before getting into acting. In her recent interview with Zainab Salbi (on Yahoo News Original Series, Through Her Eyes), she got talking about Hip Hop music back in the 80s. During the course of the interview, she spoke about how creative rappers were back then, and how no one wanted to sound like the next rapper.

"It was a time of real creativity. You didn't want to be like the next rapper. You wanted to sound completely different from them. You wanted to be opposite of whatever someone else was doing, so you could seem, you know, unique, and have your own style. And people could, you know, see you as different from the rest. Even though we are all doing the same, you know, kind of genre of music. So, umm, it was a good time. You know. And it was a political time as well. You could talk about what was going on in the word. Talk about what was going on in your community. And then you could talk about nothing but partying. You know, so it was a great time to make music."
Yes, this is really true. There was real diversity back in the 80s. You had politically conscious rappers like Public Enemy and KRS One. And you had the super lyrical rappers like Rakim and Kool G Rap. And then party animal rappers like Will Smith and Jaz O. It was really balanced, and everyone got their shine. Not to say it isn't the same now, but the party rappers are more in the center stage than any other rappers now.
