ZZ Ward's "Last Love Song" - Song Review

A year and a half has past since my official review of ZZ Ward's debut album Til the Casket Drops. The talented musician has since performed at SXSW, completed her first tour, is currently prepping for her second and made a splash on the charts with "Put the Gun Down". The accolades keep piling up, but Ward is not through promoting her brilliant album. For the effort's third official single, the singer is servicing "Last Love Song", a heartbreaking ballad similar to the material found of Adele's record breaking 21.

In my October 2012 review, "Last Love Song" was the slow, somber moment that left a lasting impression on me as a listener. I said that if released as a future single, because it truly deserves to shine, the song would make Ward a star. I still stand by that statement. The track details the artist's frustration with her current lover, eventually throwing in the towel and moving on with her life. Production is minimal, songwriting is strong and powerful, but the song's true beauty lies in the vocals of ZZ Ward herself. She is giving Adele a run for her money. Perfection.

"No more 'you're the only one', cuz that's all done with now, this is the last love song I'll ever write for you", Ward beautifully sings as her vocals are supported only by a lonely guitar. The artist has proved successful with a jazz-like sound on her previous singles, but here she strips everything back to truly show her abilities as an artist. For those heartbroken lovers, the new song will definitely resonate and cause a tear or two to build. While radio may be drifting away from loud pop numbers, the time is perfect for the song to fully thrive as it should.

"Last Love Song" is another home run for the singer/songwriter, one that surpasses its predecessors, in my opinion. ZZ Ward may not have a legion of followers at the moment, but if the new single is promoted properly, that could quickly change. Her debut album was one of the strongest of 2012, it still holds strong today. With many great tracks included, "Last Love Song" was easily one of its brightest moments. We get to hear the true artist in this raw, utterly amazing performance. Glad she is letting the song represent the rest of the material on the album.

UPDATE: The music video premiered today (4.24.14) exclusively on Billboard. Simple, touching, black and white visual makes the perfect companion for the somber love song.
